‘I Would Like to Stay at Tottenham’

vert2Jan Vertonghen is the latest high-profile Spurs player to be officially on board with the project, after declaring that he’d quite like to sign a new contract. Barcelona may’ve expressed a roundabout interest in the defender (how Daniel Levy’s fiscal sense must’ve tingled when he realised that the Catalan club wouldn’t blink at spending €20m on a 30-year-old Jérémy Mathieu) but the quotes emanating from the Belgian media this week suggest that Jan’s heart- or at least immediate interests- is resolved on helping Spurs not be quite as sh*t as they were last year.

“It goes without saying that I would like to stay at Tottenham,”

“I still had a four-year contract but I see that they have offered me a new five-year contract as a great sign of confidence.”

Now, the sceptics among you might question whether Vertonghen’s attitude is deserving of a bumper new deal. I mean, what message does it send to the rest of the squad when the man widely considered to be the walking embodiment of half-arsery for much of last season, is being rewarded for his indifference with hot cash and job security? What’s to say that Jan’s commitment to the cause won’t dither again if things don’t go swimmingly under Pochettino? All good questions and not ones that can be answered without the gentle unfurling of time.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say. Only when Spurs are 3-1 down to Leicester on Boxing Day and Vertonghen has taken his boots off and sat himself in the centre-circle in acquiescent protest, will we truly be able to judge the depths of his enthusiasm.

For now, though, a new deal represents more good business from Daniel Levy and an indication that Spurs’ best players, with the Premier League opening fixtures quickly approaching, have some faith in the new manager and his methods. We can worry about all the other stuff later.
