Twente-Twente Vision

z-trip-shepard-fairey-european-tourI was away from all things füsball this weekend but one can only assume you could’ve copy and pasted a match report from last year’s jaunt to the Midlands and it would’ve looked awfully similar. Not terrible stuff from the men of Hotspur, just criminal acts of profligacy in front of the sticks and an all-too-predictable finale. We should’ve been out of sight at half-time, by the sounds of it. Their late equaliser came as a costly reminder that we still posses that knack of shooting ourselves in the foot at times. Silly points lost owing to the lack of a striker who can just pummel the bloody thing into the net when things are in the balance. Getting on the end of a cross would be a start. Still, worse things have happened at sea and worse things have happened at St. Andrews this year. Chelsea came unstuck there. Arsenal and United drew. All’s not lost just yet.

Talking of which. Another stamp in the passport this evening as Tottenham once again jet off into European airspace and beyond. Enschede is where they’ve landed- a Tuesday evening kick off with FC Twente and a mere three points away from reaching the summit of Group A. Safe in the knowledge that the big-hitters of Catalonia and Madrid will be thusly avoided. Top of Group A. I know there’s no prestige in such things, but if I were to top of any group, I’d want it to be Group A. It sounds, somehow…better. In the way of doing so, then, lies a team who’ve won eight out the last ten in The Eredivisie, including single-goal triumphs over Feyenoord and league leaders, PSV. Encouragingly for us, the last four have also seen two defeats against teams you’d be hard pressed to not label small fry. Make of that what you will. I guess it’s difficult to predict what you’re going to get for an outfit who’ve essentially nothing to play for. They’re going neither up nor down, whatever madness unfolds later.

No obligatory paragraph about Tottenham’s injury woes today- we all know who’s in and who’s out- just a wish for the men in Lilywhite to do as they do best in this Champions League malarkey and attack in numbers and without fear. Predictions? I predict something close to a riot.
