I DIDN’T SEE ANY OF THE ACTION IN JOHANNESBURG THIS WEEKEND BUT THE general feeling among the online community seems to be that there was enough turgid African-themed nonsense from men in white shirts last summer, to have to sit through ninety minutes of that parp. Thank-you-very-much. And, also that it’s pre-season and we probably shouldn’t read too much into it.
Dubbed by some as Kaizer Chiefs vs. Shop Window FC, as a retail exercise it was on a par with having one of the manikins in your boutique come to life and hurl excrement at the paying customers as they wander through the automatic doors. In that no-one, of those who we might be looking to move elsewhere, will have added to their stock value as a result of their performance. At this point I’ll be happy if we just leave Robbie Keane at the airport. At any airport.
Better news to filter through the gutter this week regards that of a signing. A real life signing. He’s a striker, too. Bless all that’s holy we’ve bought a striker. Before you get too excited- and believe me I don’t blame you- it might be worth pointing out that the said frontman is only sixteen. (Boo!) But what a prospect he looks. Rather predictably labelled the new Drogba- he’s big, quick and Ivorian, you see- the youngster comes fresh from the U-17 World Cup as Golden Boot winner, knocking a hat-rick against Brazil and four past the Danes along the way.
