Thoughts on Beckham?

396capture_goldmember04Good old Villa. Their rollicking finale at Stamford Bridge yesterday means that we start January in somewhat familiar territory. For a while it looked as if the footballing gods were conspiring against us- or at least lacking a sense of humour- as the wretched Terry nearly won it. Luckily for us they came to their senses just in time and delivered a hot pile of steamy justice with seconds remaining. A joyous watch.

Not that we didn’t put in our own shift on Saturday. Another three points garnered with backs against the wall. Numerical hardships not our enemy this time around, rather the spirited endeavours of our opponents. Fulham might count themselves dastardly unfortunate not to come away with something from this; the story of the second half was one of missed chances on their part and last-ditch defending and timely blocking on ours. Dawson and Gallas were required to be giants and thankfully didn’t shrink to the task. Corluka, too, was excellent. An encouraging return to action. While he doesn’t get on his horse with the same willingness and drive as Hutton on the right-hand side, he does offer a far more considered approach to the role. What he lacks in pace he makes up for in brainpower. All day long Lennon was slingshotting his way into the spaces ahead of the backline, and all day long the Croatian was the one finding him. It just works. We looked balanced.

Strangely enough the name on everyone’s lips this weekend wasn’t one of those doing their business on the field- it wasn’t even anyone within the same continent. Such is the intensity of David Beckham’s star quality, the very mention of him causes the media to wilt into a salivating wreck. You’ve spoken to him have you, Harry? Oh blimey, what did he say? Did he ask about me? What was he wearing? Did he tell you what he was wearing?

And so on.

Beckham looks to be Lane-bound. For me this is a good thing. But, as they say, not all that shimmers is goldenballs so I’d be delighted to hear your thoughts. Too much for too little?
