He Made The Right Choice…

dutch-dummiesThe weekend in a nutshell, then: Van der Vaart’s better than Joe Cole and David Ginola isn’t all that bothered about climate change. The second point isn’t too relevant but it seems fitting  that while one erstwhile idol bursts in front of our eyes like a beefeater tomato in a microwave- all in the name of a good Eco-campaign- another ready made hero is waiting to step into his burnt-out  shoes. The Dutch dynamo is just a little bit of terrific. Goals, desire, confidence, a penchant for grappling the elderly- this guy’s a regular renaissance man. To paraphrase Kenny Powers: he’s got a left-foot like a cannon and a mind like a f*cking scientist.

There’re occasions when one has to thank the footballing gods that things turn out as they do. The ruddy excellent TOMM remarks on one such turn of events here– but for me, as well as this, the decision made my Joseph Cole to follow his heart (ie: 90,000 p/week) all the way to Anfield, surely has to rank as one of the most telling in our recent history. For both club and player. Let’s be frank, if Harry’d managed to coax the England whiz into his bunker this summer- as many assumed he would- Van der Vaart wouldn’t be playing for Spurs now. He’d quite likely be at United. Or, god forbid, Liverpool. In some kind of awful parallel universe where we’re being booed off every week, losing to Blackpool and sitting precariously close to the League’s trap door. Still we’d have Joe Cole, though, eh?

Bullet dodged is one I’ve heard a few times. I’d like to say it’s akin to side-stepping a rocket-propelled grenade.

You keep him. Honestly. We’ll, you know *sigh* make do. Ho-hum.

There was discussion on here yesterday about the role of Modric in this new-look midfield. It was encouraging that the general opinion traced a similar line to my own thoughts; that the Croatian, while not necessarily being centre stage, has taken up different, perhaps more valuable duties. Watching him on Saturday, although there were no blistering fireworks to make you go all gooey, it’s clear he’s more than happy to sit back and tug the strings. Quick passes, efficient use of the ball, everything going through him. He’s basically Paul Scholes. Nowhere near the finished product- as the United midfielder clearly is- but you can see why S’Ralex batted his eyelashes N17 way over the summer. Modric is vital to us. You believe otherwise then you’d only need to look at Spurs when he’s not playing. We’re soulless. And the thought of him, Bale and VdV in the same team makes me want to kiss Joe Cole’s shiny, puckered forehead.

Right, another interminable International interlude awaits. Luckily I’ve got all manner of things to get you through it. Competitions, updates to the site and plenty of general waffle to keep you warm on those chilly October evenings. Stay tuned, troops.
