Cameos, Contracts and Overpriced Pistachios

International Rescue...

International Rescue…

And a very good morning to you. Did everyone enjoy the weekend’s international high jinks? Hmm? If you did then you’re in luck as it says here we’re in for another dose tomorrow night. I know, mercy. England and Ghana the names on almost no-one’s lips this time around; the Black Stars all dusted off from their Saturday African Nations qualifier with Congo and very much London-bound. The swizz is, of course, that nine hours of sky-time and overpriced pistachios for players and travelling fans will be rewarded with a pointless friendly whereby most of Ol Blighty’s box-office names will be tucked up in bed with their respective club’s duvet and matching pyjamas. Or at best used in a cameo role so brief it would make Alfred Hitchcock’s acting credits look weighty.

Captain Barry says it all, really. It’s a struggle to figure out what’s more depressing; the fact that that insipid nurk is the chap chosen as a leader of men or that the issue of captaincy has been the biggest talking point for well over a week. Dark forces at work, I tell you. Dark, boring forces.

But it’s not all bad. The joyous news coming out of Tottenham in recent days is that William Gallas and Gareth Bale have both signed new contracts. Whoopty Doo! But what does it all mean, Basil? Well, sport. With regards to Bale, sceptics out there might argue that Daniel Levy is just anchoring Boy Wonder down to a nice plump contract now in order to harvest to premium coinage out of him in the warmer months, when the hounds of Europe start trying to catch a scent. Maybe it’s the old romantic in me, but it sounds like Bale’s actually quite keen on sticking around. Daft, eh?:

“We have got a great squad that is still young and we are going places. It is great to commit to the club, and hopefully we can achieve what we believe we can with this squad.

“The players want what the fans want, and performing in front of these fans is a special experience.

“I definitely believe we can challenge for a title very soon. That is why I have signed. Every year as a minimum we are aiming to qualify for the Champions League, so we are definitely going in the right direction.”

They grow up so fast.
