5 (ish) Players Tottenham Should Consider This Summer

While those words might not strike fear into your average sword-swinging Westerosian, for fans of domestic football everywhere, it certainly spells bad news. The 2015/16 season is over and it’s never coming back.

But no need to panic. As well as a rather nifty international tournament just weeks away, the warmer months signal the beginning of the transfer window. With every club in the country’s top division, how can we put this, rich as pirates now, the speculation might be even more frantic than usual.

Here’re 5 players that Spurs might do well to investigate:

Saúl Ñíguez

Highly-rated, combative Spanish midfielder and stand-out performer in Atletico’s double challenge on La Liga and the Champions League this season.

Why would a potential European Cup winner wish to down tools for a relative rookie on the continental circuit, I hear you ask? Well, money for one. Everyone is ludicrously wealthy now, as we’ve mentioned, so deals that might’ve seemed improbable a few years ago, suddenly are much more likely to materialize.

See, Giannelli Imbula to Stoke City.

Also, Spurs are an attractive proposition for motivated young players these days. Mauricio Pochettino has carved himself quite a niche for improving already talented players the right side of 24 and Ñíguez, while not exactly floundering under Simeone, might embrace the challenge in North London.

Michy Batshuayi

Unless Harry Kane has volunteered to be part of some weird medical trial, in which to determine how many games a professional footballer might be able to play in a row before his legs fall off, there’s a good chance the young striker will need some help next season.

And there’re few better, or, importantly available, options than the Belgian goal-peddler. Two-footed, skilful, and an upper-body as strong as a ballast tractor; he has all the attributes to flourish in the Premier League.

One snag in the plan might be that Juventus have reportedly declared their interest. On the other hand, so have West Ham.

Sadio Mané

Buying strikers without Premier League experience is a tricky business. For every Sergio Agüero there’s a Roberto Soldado and Spurs, more than most, know that throwing big money at big names isn’t necessarily a failsafe route to success.

Sadio Mané has been in England for two seasons now. While some would argue that the Senegalese striker has been a model of inconsistency in his time here, there have been some games which have wonderfully showcased his talents.

His recent match-ball-winning performance against Man City illustrated everything good about the Southampton man. Explosive speed, cool-headed finishing. Mané wouldn’t come cheap— around £25m, at least— but a deal would represent much less of a risk than other cheaper options from overseas.

Moussa Dembélé

If at first you don’t succeed. Spurs failed in their attempts to bring the France Under-20 striker north of the City in January. Fulham, for some reason felt that disposing of their top scorer might have a detrimental effect on their season. It’s almost as if they were worried about getting relegated for the second time in three years.

With the imminent re-opening of the transfer window, the smart money is on Spurs going in for another bash. Dembélé contributed directly to 21 of Fulham’s 66 goals last season (15 goals and 6 assists). The hope is that the teenager can make the same triumphant leap from lower-League to Premier League as managed by Dele Alli.

Leandro Damião

Oh, go on. For old time’s sake?
