P.O.T.S
Player of the Season
Rightio. The idea of getting a polling widget has struck a few problems. Mainly, that Wordpress seems to hate them. I know, I know. Weird. Anyway if you’d like to submit your votes in the comments box below that would be just dandy. A little slice of lovely democracy for everyone.

Yes!! This is ace, Foxington.
Shiny, isn’t it?
Yay, love your work
It would be all too easy to say, say, Bale or Lennon, but I’m thinking Dawson or Gomes.
Okay Foxy, I vote for…
Heurelho Gomes.
He’s mint, he is.
(sorry Daws, I only got one vote hon
)
Gomes.
It’s either him or that lad Camaraderie who’s been so influential this season. He’s all over the pitch!
We tried Polldaddy. It didnae work…
It needs a add-on installed. I’ve PM’d you.
Jermain Jenas – best impersonation of a ghost
Defoe – most incapable of learning the offside trap
Bentley – best drench in y-fronts moment
modric – geekiest looking footballer
Kaboul – biggest Ru Paul lookalike
King – the bionic man
Gomes – Octopus
Dawson – my player of the season
Dawson.
He was immense all season long, the ever present in an ever changing back four, our success was built on the solid foundations he helped lay. Bravo sir!
I’m going for Gomes he’s been our get out of jail free card all season, without him we’d have been sunk.
Pretty much between Dawson or Gomes then?
It’s a huge shame that players like Lennon, Modric and King have been injured for such large chunks of the season. If they had stayed fit we may be even higher up the table!
Jamie. What a couple of seasons eh? There was a point in time when I was being rather helplessly coerced by your arguments to get rid of Les. Somethings clicked with that boy in the same way as has clicked with Azza post Bentley arrival, and has clicked with Baler this season. The improvement under Arry and his team has been nothing short of phenomenal. Still a few creases to iron out in the individual performances, still a few in the teams’, but overall Les’ contribution to our solid defence is to be welcomed with open arms, and tears of gratitude. How glad am I that we didn’t get rid of him, and shot Ramos (who shot JR?) and his miscommunications instead.
See – the trouble we have here is that so many players have been amazing. POTS just doesn’t make sense when you can pick half a dozen players who have been so bloody good.
I’ve changed my mind – I’m voting ‘Arry as player of the season.
Gomes.
Dawson has been awesome, no doubt, but the Octo-Wife Shagger was immense all season and his stature only grew during our run in. His saves against the Arse kept us in front that day.
Heurelho Gomes, you are the love of my life..
Heurelho Gomes, I’d let you shag my wife..
Heurelho Gomes, I wish I was Brazilian too..
It’s official – Bale has signed a new deal. No one is leaving this summer. One or two nice new signings and we can win the CL and the PL. And Masterchef.
One of the most satisfying aspects of this season has been the ability of so many different players to step up and put the team on their backs at various times. In the early going, it was Defoe and Lennon ripping apart every defense they saw. Kranjcar came to town and not only filled in admirably for Modric but suddenly became our most potent scoring threat for a few weeks. Dawson seized his chance to solidify the center of a defense ravaged by injuries and build a most improbable case for getting in the England team. Pavlyuchenko came in from the wilderness and was unstoppable just when it looked like our attack was fizzling. Bale got his mojo back and re-emerged as a budding superstar. King is…he’s Ledley Fucking King, that’s what.
Lennon was the player of the first half of the season, Bale the player of the second half. If either had been able to play at that level the entire way, they’d have won this hands down. But in terms of who done brung the business week in and week out right from the get-go, I think it boils down to two guys: Gomes and Huddlestone.
We didn’t realize how important Thud was until he had to sit out a few games with that foot/ankle injury. The midfield and indeed our entire passing game just ticks along so much better when he’s in there. He’s not too flash—even those 60-yard diagonal quarterback balls seem ho-hum now—but he’s just quietly gotten the job done all season long. Tremendous consistency and possibly overlooked importance defensively, particularly when Palacios had the odd spell off the boil. Still plenty of room for improvement from the big guy, but for once that’s a source of excitement rather than frustration.
For player of the season, though, I’m going to join the chorus in favor of Gomes. For me, it’s between him and Reina for the best keeper in the league at the moment. Reina might be a bit more tactically aware and a slightly superior all-around keeper, but Gomes himself has come on leaps and bounds in how he commands the area and handles crosses. He’s not just a shot-stopper anymore. That said, what a shot-stopper! I don’t know how many times I’ve watched his save of Van Persie’s free kick, but I could probably see a hundred more and still not understand how the hell Gomes managed to get to that ball. Superman wears Octopus pajamas.
What a splendid post.
Totally agree with Lennon being our PotS for the first half and Bale being PotS for the second.
However, like you, taking the season as a whole, I think it’s very hard to pick anyone other than Gomes, who was been nothing short of awesome. Dawson, too, who I absolutely adore, but Gomes has single handedly won/kept us in games, and his level of improvement is quite startling.
I know the end result was shit, but his outrageous double penalty saves against Bent/Sunderland, and his late heroics against Arsenal are but two enduring memories of him that I’ll take from this season.
Yeah, I would’ve put Dawson in the POTS troika, but he didn’t really get his chance until the end of November. Gomes and Thud had banked a bunch of good performances by then.
As with Lennon and Bale, if Dawson had played a bit more I’d say it’d be a coin flip between him and Gomes. I’ve never been happier to be so wrong about a player. Before this season, I was convinced he’d never be more than a bit of a liability as a third or fourth choice CB. Shows what I know.
Thanks, Longwell.
I could read your stuff all day.
It takes me that Long to. Oh Well
Back to Johnny and Jennifer Yellow Hat for me. Cracking appraisal, hats off
Heurelho da Silva Gomes is the man for me too. Or how I like to think of him, Huerelho “the man who’s going to help us to da Silva” Gomes.
PS Is that Sinead O’Connor in your new avatar? Or Marcel Marceaux, I get the two mixed up.
Neither! ‘Tis comic genius Mike Myers as Dieter from “Sprockets”.
touch my monkey…touch him…love him!
our most important player in the squad is ledley king. he serves up the most awe inspiring performaces without even training.
the player of the season however has to be dawson. he has consistenly performed since he got back to full fitness in october/november. we have the twin towers, not manure.
ledley and king are argubly the best pairing in the lague and that is not even our best combination cos woody has been injured.
we have an excellent squad and im sure that we will do very well in the CL.
COYS
Ledley and King? Imagine if we did have two of him
Ledley and Dawson aren’t a bad coupling either.
