Now There’s an Idea We Don’t Speak Americano

By the time this post bombs its way down the tracks of the internet autobahn and into your living rooms, Tottenham’s ungodly hour tussle with the New York Red Bulls will have long since finished. With the crystal ball still collecting dust in the loft I shan’t risk any muddled predictions. The very least I can hope for- sat here, at the time of writing, with two beer cans sellotaped to the side of my head awaiting kick-off- is that  Terry Henry gets a damn good booing. Also, a curious part of me is interested to see how many years Robbie Keane has notched onto his belt since last Saturday. Word from our man in America is that he’s maturing like an old nectarine left on the back porch in forty-degree heat. I hereby dub him… The Badger.

Untold wealth to any New Yorker who can provide a match report for those of us destined to wake up tomorrow morning with QWERTY imprinted onto our foreheads- instead of any recollection whatsoever of seeing the chaps in action. I think I still have a signed England shirt knocking about somewhere- if, of course, you’re in need of a new rag to dry your paint brushes with.

No. Wait…come back.

Back to the present. Or is it the future? Or. Um. Well, I’ve confused myself terribly there. Ah, yes. In other news, we still haven’t signed anyone yet. A half-baked potato emerged in the tabloids yesterday- for all of twenty minutes we were linked with the ever-so-slightly-past-it, Raul, before it became clear that his future, despite being in conractual limbo, lay elsewhere. Schalke 04 the thinking man’s port of call, although my guess is he’ll just bury himself up to the ankles in the centre-circle at the Bernabeu- like a re-potted plant- and spend the rest of his lung-breathing days there. Like, forever.

Now. Let’s see if this link is wor-

  1. Slept like a baby right through it all. Probably better, cause if I saw Henry score one more goal against us I would have broken the tele!

  2. 1st??????? WOW! Wake up!!!!!

That was horrible. First off the yanks don’t know how to show a line up. The way they drew it, JJ and Thudd were pushed right up to support Pointy Bob, with Krankie and Baler supporting those two.

Secondly, their goal showed what a shite defender Hutton is. And how Charlie was far too pedestrian as a central defender against the movement of an aging THenry.

We won a friendly with what can be descibed as only half a team. Then again I only saw the highlights as linked, and am worrying already about the start of the season with this lineup.

Oi WFRF. It’s not putting my posts up again. Have I been banned?

I’ve seen enough to convince me that Huddlestone should never play centre back.

Ah. It’s only posts where I link the highlights to the game.

Pre season is just a bit of fun. In the real world it is just where the players blow away their cobwebs and the fans relieve their boredom. So no need for worry about it just enjoy it.

Only difference would be if we were settling in some new players. Then you can see some things. But Spurs love to buy and sell on the last day of the window so we have no new players to settle in.

I was at the game last night – I live in NYC and this was my only chance to see the team this year. One thing to note is that New York in the summer is ungodly hot and humid, so if the players looked tired, it’s because they were. The good: Bale and Modric were excellent – cornerstones for years to come hopefully. That’s it for the positives. Kranjcar was uncharacteristically poor in possession, Keane looks washed up – missed some good chances and lived offside, and Hutton was absolutely worthless. Cudicini looked decent stopping shots, but his distribution is terrible and hands are shaky. As for the youth, only Townsend looked half-decent.

I was not at the game, but I largely agree with EG. Modric and Bale looked a cut above. Kranjcar and Thud had some good ideas but weren’t sharp. Thud misses Wilson to help him do the dirty work in the middle; Jenas was a passenger as usual. I starting to be a believer in Townsend too. The kid looks a much, much improved player relative to the few times I saw him last season. He appears a lot more powerful (did he add like a stone and a half of muscle?) and had some phenomenal touches.

So, what else? Hutton got skinned by some Estonian bloke. Charlie and Walker are not center backs. Naughton is not a left winger. Taraabt is still the most physically gifted mediocre footballer I’ve ever seen. Keane needs some black horn-rims and he’s Michael Douglas in “Falling Down”.

A couple scrappy goals, but we created some attractive chances.

    Roll on Sporting.

  10. The consensus is that Hutton is below par and needs to be moved on. Jenas was also a bit naff (surprise!). Bale looked tasty. He’s gagging for the season to start.

And good point on the greying Keano. His ‘dream’ stint at Celtic must have aged him something terrible – he looks ancient!

Obika looked quite the handful against Sporting Lisbon yesterday, bless him – Did anyone catch how he was manhandled just before being interviewed??

Hutton looked a liability as a defender all the way through the tournament, no surprise there.

Finally, a massive big-up to the American wing of the Spurs family – there was a fantastic atmosphere at all the games over there, especially the New Yoik ones – so much so that Bale was moved to comment on it.

Give yourselves a collective pat on the backs!
