So, as the 1989 Epson fax machine in ‘Arry’s office is unplugged and dumped back under the desk for another year- a gnarled mess of ink and paper, pissing black smoke from age and overuse- we reflect on a month which has seen us be among the busiest of Premiership tradesmen. Granted, not quite the exhilarating transfer bonanza of twelve months ago- times aren’t quite so anxious- but an intriguing saga nonetheless.
Alas, between all the mêlée of players wandering in and out- Kaboul and Gudjohnsen being part of the former- we appear to have lost our erstwhile team-captain somewhere along the way. Captain being a loose term, of course. It’s considered fairly difficult to exercise any kid of authority if your role is limited mainly to gesticulating and frowning from the bench. Nevertheless, Robbie Keane has gone to Celtic until the season’s end. As we’ve been informed, it’s been a long time ambition of Robbie’s to don the hoops of green and white; presumably it’s right up there with playing for Liverpool and swimming with bottle-nose dolphins. Gauging the general mood towards Keane this season, some quarters even might suggest an alternative sea dweller for the Irishman to cuddle up to.
A shark, for example.
In all seriousness, I think it’s the right move for him. From the onset of his return- ignoring all counts of treachery and betrayal- I was keen to see Robbie pick up where he left off. Call me an old romantic, but I assumed it would be like the good old days; getting up defenders’ noses, thumping goals from all angles, cartwheeling his way along the touchline in the manner of someone just happy to be there. Perhaps a few mimed pistol whips in there for good measure. What a hoot he was having. But, lately, instead of getting up the nasal cavities of the opposition, he’s been generally getting on the collective tits of the Spurs faithful while doing whatever the opposite of thumping in goals is. Even the cartwheels have stopped- on the odd occasions they are called for.
A parting of the ways, then, can hardly come as a shock, despite the eleventh hour frenzied look about it. It’s become quite clear that we’ve moved on without him. And, while I wouldn’t suggest our striking options are now perfect- gawd knows Crouch isn’t exactly setting the world ablaze- at least now we’ve got the chance to progress unhindered while ridding ourselves of the spectre of a damaged goods which has been threatening to do naff all for some time now.
Or did he deserve one last hurrah in a Lilywhite shirt?
What say y’all?

It’s totally the right move. He was doing nothing but impeding Pav,who Harry will now have to give more chances. He has always been a confidence player and that was low since Rafa got his grubby manos on him, and got lower when the crowd deserted him. He is now in a crappy, slow league and I think he will score goals for fun. If that happens, we get back an in form player who will help us next year or (more likely) be sold at not too great a loss.
Also, he was deflecting hatred from Jenas. Now we can all concentrate on that tango instructor.
Yes but who will we blame if ever Jenas leaves? Especially now that Bale has thrown off the hoodoo shackles. Oh yes Kaboul’s back.
Jenas to play tomorrow and score. He will still get the blame for something though.
I’d cheer if that were to happen, but I really doubt it. I carried on with saying JJ will come good for longer than most, but I just can’t see it anymore.
Funny, I remember when we got Hutton, some guy in Scotland (a rangers fan I think) was laughing, saying they were glad 2 see the back of him – bet he is in stitches now, oh how he has been proved right …. As for Keane, good luck but don’t come back – you will love playing =2 Championship football coz that’s all you have ever been good 4 – you always looked good at Spurs in an adv team, now we are just above adv, we can see what crap you really r … Mind you look at Celtic, once a top team then take a manager who’s only success was … was … was …. and make him manager of your team … Shows he don’t know what 2 do by taking our 3rd/4th placed rubbish striker … another manager 4 the chop then … Now if we could get rid of Redknap as well – Any takers ??? (and no I’m not kidding) never was any more than a mediocre manager and never will be any more than that… And why bring Kabole back – if i wanted to support Portshmoth I would have …. GET RID OF HARRY ASAP Mr Levy
Oh I do like the feel of this site, well done again Mr. WFRF. That’s one waster down and another to go let the JJ witch hunt begin in earnest, i’ve just cut down my favorite pear tree to make the stakes. Redknapp out?? Peter please, Gomes, King, Corluka, Lennon Modric, Bale, BAE. Woodgate(??), Palacios, Pav, Huddlestone have never been to Pompey Comprehensive. Defoe and Kaboul are ours really. Thank them very much for NIKO the good and for Crouch..hmm. Ok they may have seen us coming with that one.
Would it be overly facetious of me to make some casual sarcastic remark like:
“I see he set the SPL alight in his debut game last night”
?
Meow!
He won’t be missed by many, but he will almost certainly miss (even up there) especially on those pesky one on ones. The Bob we all loved went away with the cartwheel celebration.
I still firmly believe, even after the goals dried up for Keano, that he plays a very useful role “in the hole” linking play, which does not get enough recognition from folks.
He’s better at doing that than Defoe or Crouchinho will ever be.
Think Eidur might be able to play that role though, Luka also (although he tends to sit too far back).
I’d like to see Kranjcar given a chance there. He is a much more prolific goalscorer than Modric or Gudjohnsen.
The Icelander was a class player and you know what they say about class. That was then however and he hasn’t played this year; didn’t do much last year, and only scored 10 goals in 70 appearances over three years at Barcelona.
Don’t expect too much from the boy. But don’t we always.
Actually his signing makes as much sense as trying to sign Van Nistelrooy, not much to me.
The old Keane has been severely missed for a long time. The relationship with the fans just hasn’t been the same. Before, he could do no wrong! Lately, it was all just wrong. The pointing, the shouting… just didn’t sit so well with the Lilywhite faithful anymore. Hoping he destroys the SPL and comes back to us hungry for revenge. Will the real Keano please stand up!
You can have him back. Our season is all but over.
