Tottenham Hotspurs have been building their future for a long time, hoping to become a force to be reckoned with in the English Premier League. Tim Sherwood, their one-time manager, was a part of the process, but eventually the keys were given to Mauricio Pochettino, who has transformed Spurs in to legitimate title contenders. Despite looking like they’ll fall short beneath Leicester City this season, their former boss believes they can go on to challenge season upon season, and with the foundation of their team laid in an impressive manner, it’s hard to see them doing anything other than improving year after year, and perhaps becoming a regular UEFA Champions League side, also.

Spurs needed to beat Manchester United to keep their hopes alive, and they did so in style, winning 3-0, showing just how much the two club’s have swapped fortunes over the past 5 years.

Former boss, Sherwood, insisted, “The United game showed again why Tottenham are contenders – when things don’t click for them up front, they have got a solid defence to fall back on. It meant United only managed one shot on target in the entire game, which saw one of the best goalkeepers in the league – Hugo Lloris – make a great save.”

Spurs are solid from the back, and they’re never easy to out-play, or to score against, however, it’s their attack that frightens the opposition. The likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli are unstoppable, and yet, they’re young enough to improve, meaning Spurs’ title challenges should keep coming, meaning the likes of bookies.com will continue to back Spurs as a heavy favourite for years to come. Can they handle the pressure?

Spurs proved their worth in a 10-minute spell in which they scored 3 goals. Sherwood added “They can do that because they have got match-winners, players who can turn games. I don’t think Dele Alli had his best game against United, or Harry Kane, but you still knew they were on the pitch.”

He explained “They do not go missing even if they are not playing well and they still affect the game, which we saw with Tottenham’s first goal, where Kane started the move and Alli finished it. After that they came forward in wave after wave and could have scored even more than three in the end.”

If it wasn’t for the Foxes’ magical season, Spurs would be title winners, however, the consistent side should further improve, and that means more title challenges will occur.

Sherwood went on to say “Even if Tottenham keep winning, this is Leicester’s title to lose now – it would take a ‘Devon Loch’ from Claudio Ranieri’s side for them not to win it from here.”

He concluded “But Tottenham are not making it easy for them. They are breathing right down their neck and, if there is any slip up from the Foxes, they will be right there. Part of the pressure on the teams at the top is that Chelsea are out of touch and Manchester United are not looking like the side they used to be.”

The end of their journey will be not be reached this season, however, Mauricio, and Sherwood, originally, have put a plan in place that should ensure long-term success for Spurs, and it’s highly likely this will be the first of many title challenges, with the UCL a competition they’ll at least earn a place in on a yearly basis.

How good can Spurs become?
