Harry Kane: capable of firing Tottenham to the title?

Last season, Harry Kane was on another level. He was by far and away the best striker in the Premier League, finishing as the Golden Boot winner with an incredible 25 goals – an even more impressive accomplishment when you remember that he is just 23-years-old. His strikes were crucial as Mauricio Pochettino’s men pushed Leicester City all the way in the race for the Premier League crown. Unfortunately, Spurs fell short but Pochettino’s side will go again this season – that elusive finish above north London rivals Arsenal isn’t too far away.

Being completely honest, Kane was abysmal for England at Euro 2016 this summer. He struggled to cope with the intense pressure on his shoulders after performing so well in the league last season but Spurs may benefit directly from England’s early exit in the competition. At the time of writing, Tottenham are priced at 10/1 to win the title and Kane, 11/2 in Betway’s football odds, could also get his hands on the Golden Boot. After all, this talented Spurs midfield should create plenty of opportunities for their talismanic striker, and he could win the award for the second season running…

The Spurs striker is widely regarded as one of the best forwards in the top flight and fans will be relying on the England man to record a similar amount of goals this season. It won’t be easy though. Tottenham will have to adapt and juggle their European commitments with the Premier League. Matches will come thick and fast and Pochettino will be wary of becoming over-reliant on Kane in attack. That is perhaps why the club moved for AZ Alkmaar man Vincent Janssen earlier this summer – at least Spurs now have a competent replacement if required.

Last season, Tottenham struggled to inspire confidence when Kane was off the field and that simply cannot happen this time around. If Spurs are to stand any chance of winning the title, Pochettino will need everybody to pull their weight, especially in attacking areas. Janssen may take some time to adjust to the pace of the Premier League but he is certainly capable of chipping in with a few goals as and when he is needed. The Dutchman showed just how talented he is in the penalty area on a regular basis throughout the 2015/16 campaign.

Whilst some believe that Janssen’s arrival may hinder Kane’s chances of winning the Golden Boot, the England man believes otherwise. The Janssen-Kane combination may be lethal in front of goal next season and a genuine partnership could blossom at White Hart Lane if Pochettino opts to adopt a dual-striker formation this season. It isn’t beyond the realms of possibility and Spurs will be excited at the thought of Pochettino following Leicester’s ploy of using two forwards. After all, we know how effective 4-4-2 was for the Foxes last season…

Spurs will be targeting the title but a top four finish must be their primary aim this season. Balancing the Champions League with their domestic fixtures could hinder Tottenham’s chances of glory, but one thing is for sure: Kane will be a dominant figure at the forefront of Pochettino’s glistening attack. Look no further than the England man for the Golden Boot award next season… and Spurs may reap rewards in their pursuit of the top flight crown.
