Who Needs Modric?

We, we, we do.

If ‘Arry Redknapp does nothing else this summer; naught bar rouging his cheeks up on the fairway of some warm Greek island golf course with his Blackberry on silent, he can- at the very least- look back on the close season and feel it’d gone rather well. While our movements in the transfer market have been unremarkable as yet, the work done to consolidate what’s already here has been nothing shy of fabulous.

The ink cartridge in Levy’s printer will need replacing soon. We’ve just about seen the first light of June and already two of our most esteemed members have declared themselves in for the long haul. First Bale and now, to the soundtrack of a million Tottenham fans mumbling through the Croatian national anthem, Luka Modric. A better signature we won’t hope to get this window- nor one as lengthy. Six years. Almost unheard of. As too, the bandying around of phrases such as these which fell onto our ears yesterday: “Tottenham Hotspur gave me my chance in the Premier League and I want to go on to achieve great success here with them’’. If United have been eyeing up our thoroughbreds like a judge at Crufts in the last few weeks, then Modric’s scribble is worth the equivalent of a mutt curling out a biscuit on S’Ralex’s desk. Perhaps we could send them Jermain Jenas instead- although I’d give more hope to the canine’s deposit.

It’s going to take some getting used to, then, but it looks like we might be able to loosen up during these warmer months. Instead of the usual heart-stopping foray into the newspaper’s sport pages with the twitch of someone expecting the worst- usually in the form of our best player slipping into a different colour shirt- we ought to be safe in just kicking back in our armchairs, popping something fizzy from the fridge and looking toward to the prospect of a bit of footy on the ol’ moving picture box.

Who knows, we might be joined by Theo Walnut. That young man looks like he might be set for a quiet summer, too.

 Too soon?
