Bobby Feels The Love

There aren’t too many occasions when it’s possible for us lowly farmhands to feel sympathy toward footballers. With their fast cars, supermodel wives and fashionable haircuts. In a less curious world, perhaps the one thing you mightn’t expect from a millionaire earning a handsome sack of coins to punt synthetic leather around, is for him to inspire compassion. Even less likely if the well-oiled ballkicker’s prime functions- ie, scoring them goals– had temporarily deserted him. Dog-turd-through-the-letter-box outrage would be more like it.

And yet here we are. One nicely taken effort against Cardiff- the League’s second-worst team- and grown adults sink to their knees, praising the Almighty Footballing Gods. Twitter timelines belch into joyous life. Did you hear the news? Robert Soldado has scored a bloody goal. Well done, that man.

A curious world maybe, but you’d need a heart made of limestone not to be pleased for the Spaniard in his moment of liberation on Sunday. The relief when he hurtled into the box and nimbly transformed Adebayor’s squared ball into the game’s eventual winner was as clear as Heisenberg crystal. Forget the price-tag, the state of the opposition or how much money is being siphoned into his high-interest ISA: that goal meant an awful lot to Soldado and the clods like us willing him to do well.

Now score twenty more, was Sherwood’s suggestion after the game, in a flurry of well-meant encouragement. And, if Soldado can just download New Star Soccer for his smartphone before the season finishes, he might be in with a chance.

Here’s the man himself, talking on Spanish radio via THBN:

“Despite being a long time without scoring the support that I have received in the social network has been amazing. Every time I touch the ball people are expecting to see the best of me and the reaction after the goal was amazing. I feel very loved here despite I haven proving anything to them.”

“I have to face the challenge with maturity. If I would experience this struggling situation at 22 year I would probably go back home one month later but not now.

“It is a positive experience for me, for my family and for the education of my children. Furthermore, I think we have a great squad and I am convinced that we still can have a good season. I am the only guilty about my situation and hopefully I will improve it.”
