I am glad AVB went out to win the Europa—no reason to be in a competition unless you want to win, and I think the experience will help the club. But I would agree that progressing in the Europa was a factor in not getting CL football simply because the squad isn’t big or deep enough to not drop points in the league after some tough European matches. Look at our matches the month after beating Le Scum:

Mar 7 FT Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Internazionale
Mar 10 FT Liverpool 3-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Mar 14 FT Internazionale 4-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Mar 17 FT Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Fulham

Mar 30 FT Swansea City 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Apr 4 FT Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 FC Basel

Apr 7 FT Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Everton

Four PL games in that stretch, 12 points on offer, and we took only four. Arsenal’s games in that was month quickly going out of the CL (to Bayern), but in the league they played four and won four. They picked up eight points on us in that month, and that was the ball game.

There is a very good reason why we got 72 points all this meant was we drawn less games and the secret was something i debated with other fans in our last season under Harry. This was playing Bale has a second striker this was not some master stroke by AVB but injury's and having no strikers forced him to play Gareth has a makeshift striker and it worked just like i said it would along with a few other fans . My argument is three pointed firstly Bale won us 28 points our defense conceded 46 goals the 8th worse in the Premiership and the one place you cant afford to rotate because it has to be a well oiled unit if you play a high line. Secondly the reason we got more points was wonder goals from the outstanding Bale who turned draws into wins and the third reasonr we failed was because Arsenal only had top four to aim for. During this spell we lost a seven point gap during our killer Thursday games and the 120 mins against Basle the dirtiest team in the comp according to states left us with no Bale Lennon and tired legs. When we played Wigan we had players carrying knocks Bale ankle Lennon groin Ady knee Defoe hip Dembele hip both could need operations to fix especially Dembele. We also missed a passer when Sandro played he would burst forward with Dembele but when Parker came in he would slow play down then run and lose the ball . I tweeted every week for Huddlestone to be given a chance he had not played since the Leeds game and it worked the problem is it worked better with Dembel or Holtby alongside him . I will be the first to admit Huddlestones not back yet to is best but 14 months out i no is ot long enough for scar tissue to heala full close season will help him. Your right winning Cups breeds success but tired legs cost points playing a few like Townsend Pritchard Smith Rose Benteleb Mcvoy Luongo could have helped our energy levels in the final run in one i no Dr Wenger sport science knows how to finish 8 1-0 games without extra energy i no they would have drawn or lost. I have tried to tell fans for the past 6 seasons energy supplements are being used to up work rate to limit the space for teams to play in and the introduction of pure Caffeine was to stop other illegal drugs being used like the ones Kolo Toure use. when he got banned. The only reason he got caught was because he was unused sub against Utd this is why i knew Arsenal would finish above us but loving Spurs i prayed for a miracle when Wigan got to Wembely i knew it was mission impossible Wigan could not match Arsenals work rate for 90 plus mins with a tired depleted back line and the on loan Scharner gifting chances. My Verdict Football extra energy swallowing before and at Half time means with cheats beating the testers through running supplements off during games Kolo Toure full up wont happen again and this Cartel are protected by the FA and Prem UTD Chelsea Arsenal City i no 100 percent<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('105761','DAVSPURS'); return false;">Reply in new thread</a> |<a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('105761','DAVSPURS','There is a very good reason why we got 72 points all this meant was we drawn less games and the secret was something i debated with other fans in our last season under Harry.
Davspurs, the last statement you made is simply wrong! You're saying we performed worse in the league because we made effort in the Europa League this year - However, we actually finished with our highest points total ever... so can you please explain why Redknapp playing the kids in the Europa League and playing better football (as you put it) couldn't get to 72 points in 3.5 years at the club but AVB sending his team out with a winning mentality in each game (including cups) does it in his first season?

I believe winning breeds winners... win in the cups, carry that feeling over. Slightly bigger squad next season and hopefully not so many long term injuries and we will be able to get the few extra points it takes for a title challenge.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('105754','Danny'); return false;">Reply in new thread</a> |<a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('105754','Danny','Davspurs, the last statement you made is simply wrong!
Well Foxy another season has passed we all need to have our hearts checked because another seasaon like the last one could kill us all. My report on AVB goes like this Defensethe rotating and the missing Kaboul i believe cost us top four. Firstly we had the Keeper sweeper fiasco playing a high line with a keeper aged 41 was never going to work the penny dropped and in come Lloris a sweeper keeper but my worry is how small he looks and crosses and wandering of his line another faster Tommo if i am honest. Walker he has great pace that gets him out of a lot of trouble but he leaves is post open drifts inside ball watching cost us at Liverpool but will be a sensation if we keep faith. I would have moved him forward if Kaboul was fit and switched Lennon Left to cover Bale playing in middle. Dawson wheres is badge on his heart a true warrior but is major fault he gets to close to attackers gets turned or suffers players heading ball past him leaving back door open Kaboul Loris Walker speed would help cover this fault but a good defensive coach would helpworth keeping. Vertonghen great first season suffered a bit from revolving defense and changing positions better to come Ekotto never came back with the same crosses or defending for me is best is good is worse is average to many average performances when Bale moved inside Ekotto trade mark pass down the line was gone and he would lose the ball sell. Caulker had some good games and some poor games being used in Ufa then dropped caused is confidants to drain a bit made mistakes only young and will only get better. Kaboul sadly missed and a big question mark over whether he will recover fully or sadly become another Ledley King hope not according to Walker he is the fastest at the club amazing when you think Bale Lennon Walker. Naughton not good enough for a top four team. Fryer not used still a bit green from what i seen in under 21 but switched to center half at Spurs wait and see. Lennon superb season till his groin trouble surfaced needs sorting because the better he plays the more teams foul him and in the end injury stop's him got is form back in the last few games should scored unlucky. Parker not the same all action player last season sell Hudds came into the team after the Leeds game he is still getting over 14 months out and god knows we missed a passer in the middle because by the time we did six passes to move the ball from supplemented packed midfield s the area was full and is one reason we scored more goals outside the box is pass against City was superb and the one against Sunderland that Bale was fouled was superb i beieve a full close season will help him get fitter with this supplemented energetic Football that's limiting space we need Hudds still aged 26 passing more than ever Carrick proved passers are back in fashion Keep only get Fitter. Sandro sadly missed Siggy played well when he came in keep still young only get better Dempsey not the same player at Spurs scored some point saving Goals but not enough winning ones Keep still could shine Ady when he needed Avb arms around him he got benched and sulked for months over ANC Cup calling AVBa lier needs to improve in close season keep till January if same sellDefoe suffered from injury when he was flying Avb kept benching hom no good for a striker keep Kids sadly never used in the Ufa i blame for all our troubles and top four heartache Pritchard Townsend Rose McVoy Ceballos Obika Smith Luongo could have all been used to stop our defeats by teams taking advantage of our Thursday games and tired legs. Avb not a bad season but we never played with the style we did under Harry and he has learned Ufa Thursday is no good unless you have a squad like Chelsea loans injury's left us short if we keep Bale he is forgiven if not then sack and install Laudrup.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('105748','DAVSPURS'); return false;">Reply in new thread</a> |<a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('105748','DAVSPURS','Well Foxy another season has passed we all need to have our hearts checked because another seasaon like the last one could kill us all. Lennon superb season till his groin trouble surfaced needs sorting because the better he plays the more teams foul him and in the end injury stop\'s him got is form back in the last few games should scored unlucky. Parker not the same all action player last season sell Hudds came into the team after the Leeds game he is still getting over 14 months out and god knows we missed a passer in the middle because by the time we did six passes to move the ball from supplemented packed midfield s the area was full and is one reason we scored more goals outside the box is pass against City was superb and the one against Sunderland that Bale was fouled was superb i beieve a full close season will help him get fitter with this supplemented energetic Football that\'s limiting space we need Hudds still aged 26 passing more than ever Carrick proved passers are back in fashion Keep only get Fitter.

Well written article. Im honestly surprised that Arsenal didjt score via a gust of wond pushing a Szcezny goalkick into the net 6 minutes into 4 minute stoppage time or something typicallly LeArse........... t least this year we fought like heroes till the end. Not like stupid last yeat where we had to win two of our four last games and Arsenal were presented with three presents......... Being a Spurs supporter isnt easy..... If we grab Damiao or Benteke or both and Villa (keep Ade for tactical reasons) and get a Moutinho i think were set for a 4-3-3 wih Kaboul and sandro back:

Lloris
Walker - Kaboul - Vertonghen - Benny
Moutinho - Sandro - Dembele
Lennon - Damiao/Benteke - Bale

Thats a lineup arguably on par with United's<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('105744','Kirillus'); return false;">Reply in new thread</a> |<a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('105744','Kirillus','Well written article.

Can’t say I’m not disappointed, but I didn’t figure Newcastle would exert themselves too much to get a result. It’s disappointing that we came up just short, but we can’t blame anyone but us for that. 72 points is good return and we should be optimistic, especially if the rumours of Bale extending his deal come to pass.

Can't help thinking that playing just a few squad players in those away Europa games would have got ahead of l'arse and top 4.

AVB, discussing the Villa rumors:

“What comes out of speculation at this time at Tottenham is very surreal because you know this club is very active in the last weeks of the transfer window.”

So, I read this as “Levy strikes late in hope of a bargain; always has, always will. So don’t get your hopes up that our business will be done in time for the opening game.”

So it seems that AVB will once again have an unsettled squad for the first 2-3 games, with the accompanying risk of dropped points. I’m mostly content with how Levy runs the club, but I can’t get my head around his seeming willingness to trade league points for squeezing out a better price on a deal. We got 2 points from our first three games this year (loss to Newcastle away; draws at home to WBA and Norwich), and maybe a settled squad turns one of those into a win. Two more points right now and the Scum result doesn’t matter.

Sure, the squad ins and outs weren’t the only factor in those early dropped points, but you have to give the team the best chance to pick up points.
